02 Apr Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice Month 2025 – Advancing Black Maternal Health Through Equity and Justice
Every April, we come together to recognize Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice Month, a time to honour Black birthing people, spotlight systemic injustices, and call for bold, lasting change. In 2025, we launch this month under the powerful theme: Advancing Black Maternal Health Through Equity and Justice.

This month is not just about raising awareness—it is a call to action. Black women, femmes, and birthing individuals across Canada continue to face disproportionate risks and barriers in their reproductive health journeys. From medical racism to a lack of culturally affirming care, the challenges are systemic, deeply rooted, and unacceptable.
We believe that change is possible when communities, care providers, and policymakers work together through a justice-centered lens. Our campaign seeks to push beyond recognition and move toward accountability, healing, and meaningful structural transformation.
As part of this year’s campaign, we’re excited to unveil our new Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice Month logo — a visual symbol that will represent this work going forward. It stands for strength, dignity, and the powerful legacy of Black birthwork, caregiving, and community care in Canada.
To kick things off, we’ve also launched our bilingual community survey for Black doulas and birthworkers in Ottawa. (ENG) (FR) This survey is an important step in building better systems of support and advocating for the resources, recognition, and care our communities deserve across Canada.
Throughout April, we invite you to stay connected, amplify the message, and stand with us as we:
- Share research and community stories from across Canada
- Advocate for local and national recognition of Black Maternal Health Month
How you can support:
- Use our hashtags to spread the word:
- #BMHRJMonth
- #BlackMaternalHealthCanada
- #ReproductiveJusticeNow
- #BirthJustice #CulturallySafeCare #BlackFamiliesThrive
Black maternal health is not just a health issue—it’s a justice issue. Join us this April and beyond as we work to ensure that Black birthing people in Canada are seen, heard, and supported in every space.
